Coupon Racks are an economical way to measure the amount of corrosion going on in your system.
Why Use Coupon Racks?
- Provides a direct measurement of metal loss.
- Confirms whether a water treatment program is protecting equipment.
- Identifies corrosion problems before major equipment damage occurs.
- Offers a relatively inexpensive method of corrosion monitoring.

How It Works
- Install the coupon: Small metal strips or discs made from the material being evaluated are mounted in the rack.
- The coupons are weighed and measured before installation.
- Expose them to the process
- The rack is installed in a side stream or directly in the piping system.
- Water or process fluid flows across the coupon surfaces under controlled conditions.
- Leave in service
- Coupons remain exposed for a set period, often 30, 60, or 90 days.
- During this time they experience the same corrosion, scaling, or fouling conditions as the actual equipment.
- Remove and analyze
- The coupons are removed, cleaned according to standardized procedures, and reweighed.
- Weight loss is used to calculate corrosion rates.
- Visual inspection can reveal pitting, under-deposit corrosion, microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC), scaling, or other issues.
- Adjust treatment programs
- Results help operators evaluate the effectiveness of corrosion inhibitors, biocides, pH control, and other treatment chemicals.
- Treatment programs can then be optimized based on actual system performance.
